Work introduction

Think sex and seniors don’t go together? This production featuring the unique perspectives of five people over the age of 60 of diverse backgrounds, sexualities and abilities will make you think again.

In “All the Sex I’ve Ever Had”, director/writer Darren O’Donnell of the Mammalian Diving Reflex (Canada) company invites five Japanese seniors over the age of 60 to talk about their lives with sex as the starting point.

The script, developed over a month, captures O’Donnell’s dialogues with senior citizens from various diverse backgrounds, sexualities and abilities from Miyagi, Chiba, Hyogo and Toyama. Each has spent hours giving their responses via interviews on their personal histories from the perspective of their sexual experiences.

As we journey through the ages and stages of these five different lives, the music, selected by singer-songwriter Yo Irie (Japan), takes us back to decades past. At some point, the venue turns into a glittering disco—mirror-ball included!

“All the Sex I’ve Ever Had” is a raw and fascinating record of one’s youth in old age. It offers clues for living that are certainly not taught in schools. Nostalgic and moving, these courageous personal stories are a celebration of life and theater at its finest.
