Yudai Kamisato
Yudai Kamisato was born in the city of Lima, Republic of Peru, in 1982. Director and Playwright, and the head of Okazaki Art Theatre. His father emigrated to Peru from Okinawa, Japan, and his mother was born in the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. He was raised in the city of Kawasaki, in Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture. In his teens, he also lived for a few years in the Republic of Paraguay and the United States of America. He organized Okazaki Art Theatre in 2003. His works freely mix the mundane with the extraor- dinary and probe corporeality in a manner emphasizing the existence of the actors. This distinctive approach has won him high accolades on Japan’s theatre scene.
In 2006, Kamisato became the youngest person ever to win first prize in the TOGA Directors Competition. He participated in Festival/Tokyo (F/T) for three consecutive years beginning in 2010. Around this time, the absence of otherness in contemporary Japanese society began to appear more prominently as a theme in his works. For the last few years, Kamisato has continued to write plays along lines that are extensions of his concern about his own identity and reflect upon the problems faced by immigrants and workers, the relationship between the individual and nationality, and communication with others living in the same age. His Mr. Haircut (2009) was on the final list of nominees for the Kishida Drama Award that year. His last opus, black coffee (not for drink) (2013) was also on the final list and given high ratings by the judging panel.
